Bird of paradise tree
Fast growing shrub of irregular habit, sometimes trained to form a small tree. Evergreen or semi-evergreen in warm climates but deciduous in cooler regions. gorgeous, ferny, finely divided bi-pinnate foliage with small bluish-green leaflets.
Very showy conical racemes of yellow flowers with long prominent red stamens, produced mostly in early summer and then sporadically later.
Any moderately fertile, very well-drained soil in a warm sunny position. Tolerates drought and very chalky soils. Dislikes cold and wet winter conditions, but in Ireland should succeed in a sheltered location with good drainage.
Container grown plants can be overwintered under glass.
