Dawn redwood

This is one of the plants that really got me into Horticulture,

Metasequoia glyptostroboides first described from fossils discovered in 1941, dating back over 150 million years, only to have a cluster of living specimens found growing in a little explored valley in South Eastern China,

Its beautiful light green pinnate leaves emerge from March

has a very attractive conical habit eventually reaching over30m

But it being as fantastic a tree as it is it has another party trick, in Autumn its leaves turn a magnificent coppery rusty colour, as it one of only a small number of deciduous conifers,

In winter it has beautiful fissured rusty coloured bark

A tree to admire every day of the year
